Trailer Living: And then a lightbulb came on

Living in a travel trailer full time can be really annoying sometimes.

I came home from teaching a night class. It was dark (night) and I was tired (class). We have one lamp, which provides enough lighting for nearly the entire trailer, but after I turned the one lamp on, we blew a breaker. I turned it on, it blew again, I turned it on, it blew again. I made sure there was NOTHING else plugged into ANY of the other outlets. There wasn’t. Breaker blew again.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?!

Mom realized she’d inadvertently turned the heater onto double-time-heat. THAT miniscule amount of power it takes for the heater to generate just that much more heat was enough to cause our circuit (one of two … two) to resign. You bitches are requiring too much of me. I quit.

I wondered how glorious it would be to live in a house where you could have more than one device plugged in simultaneously.

I crawled in bed by the light of my cell phone. Mom and I discussed our priorities for trailer purchases. We don’t have a fridge, and after the skunk debacle of 2015, we don’t have seating in the living room. We need to cap a gas line. We should probably get curtains at some point. And a fence.

We need lighting for the bedroom too, we agreed.

“It’s a shame these lights don’t work,” I said, absentmindedly flipping the switch on an overhead light.

And it came on.

JUST LIKE THAT. I flipped the switch. The light bulb erupted in a 1973 orange glow.

The entire mood of our evening shifted.

A light bulb came on. The world is right again. We have hope.
