When dinner turns into a four-hour affair

We had dinner Saturday night with Audrey and her fiance, Brian. I worked with Audrey three years ago at a Central Texas newspaper and though we’re connected on Facebook, we haven’t kept in close touch.

When Murali and I said, “Hey, We Want to Eat With You,” Audrey and Brian said, “C’mon over!”

So we did.

And over breaded pork chops laced with mushroom gravy, and Mexican rice, cream cheese biscuits and steamed broccoli, we talked and visited and talked some more over the dessert Murali made – kheer, a rice pudding recipe from his mom who helped us make it from India. Murali and I loaded the dishwasher while they put drops in their foster dog Asa’s ears and introduced us to Grace, their dear rat, and conversation continued flowing in the kitchen.

On the way home, I thought about the best way to tell you about our dinner.

I want to tell you that the world is a better place because of Audrey and Brian. Their families, their neighborhood, their workplaces, their grocery stores, their restaurants, their pets and even ones that aren’t technically theirs – they are all better because of them.

I want to tell you that in the intimate space of their dining room, there was hardly a topic we didn’t touch upon. Religion, spirituality, work, school, weddings, relationships, dogs, jokes, traveling … the dialogue was rich, genuine and authentic.

I want you to experience this.

Maybe this weekend invite someone over for dinner.
